Wadata Inferno: Ortom donates N30m, says govt will sink boreholes to fight fire outbreak

Following the fire outbreak that razed down Wadata market in the early hours of today, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has promised to sink boreholes at strategic positions within the market to prevent such occurrences in the future.

He made the promise this morning during his visit to the market to inspect the level of damage done by the fire incident.

The governor said it will be important to have boreholes at strategic positions in the market so that water can be used by traders to quence fire as an interim measure, before emergency fire service arrive.

He said, “We will find ways to provide water here. If we can sink boreholes in strategic places so that before waiting for fire service to come, there should be some preliminary support for the market if a thing like this occurs, though we pray it will not happen again”

Ortom sympathised with victims of the fire incident and donated a sum of N30 million naira to the traders.

“We want to sympathise on behalf of the people of Benue state and Makurdi local government with the entire Makurdi traders for this unfortunate incidence of fire, and to assure you that we will stand with you, we will be with you, we will work with you. We will console you and support you.”

Earlier speaking, the vice chairman of the traders union, Mr Yusuf Abdullahi said the fire started in the early hours of the day and affected about five sections of the market.

He thanked the Governor for his visit and solicited the support of the government to prevent future occurrences of fire incidents at the market.
