Unrest in Ushongo as Benue livestock guard kill one

Members of the defunct Civilian Joint Tasks Force (CJTF) now Livestock guard are reported to have tortured a yet-to-be-identified man to death on Monday in Ushongo local government area of Benue state.

It was gathered that the said man was arrested by the members of the livestock guard on the suspicion of crime and physically assaulted him to death.

Following the incident, the livestock guards involved were arrested and taken into custody by the police while irate youths went round to set ablaze the houses of the members of livestock guards in the community leading to serious unrest.

The spokesman for the state police command, DSP Moses Yamu who confirmed the incident said the 2 out of 5 livestock guards involved were arrested and would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

“The incident happened on 3rd September (Monday). We had information that Members of livestock guard arrested somebody for theft. We gathered he was tortured to death in their office.

“The Police swung into action, arrested 2 persons while 3 escaped. The 2 suspects have been transferred to the state CID.

“Investigation is on and they would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.”

DSP Yamu said contrary to earlier reports, there was no curfew imposed in Ushongo over the incident.
